E3G is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor to lead strategic development around climate risk and resilience work within the Finance & Resilience team, and to provide support for work on this agenda across all E3G teams.

The role may be carried out from any of E3G’s offices in London, Brussels, Berlin or Washington D.C.

The role

E3G’s mission is to ensure climate safety for all.

This position reports to the Associate Director, Finance & Resilience (F&R).  E3G has a substantial track record of working on climate risk, resilience and adaptation, focusing on security, diplomacy, economic vulnerability and systemic financial resilience.

This new position will support strategic development within the F&R programme and across E3G working with other relevant teams.  The post-holder will build an internal leadership profile and could manage direct reports and funder relationships in the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering forward priorities for E3G’s work on climate risk and resilience.

  • Supporting the development and operationalisation of a refreshed E3G strategic approach to climate risk and resilience, and leading on delivery.

  • Project management and collaboration.

  • Leading and delivering new projects while also working collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues to support other projects led from other parts of F&R, or other teams.

  • Strategic communication of risk.

  • Working with E3G Communications team to develop informed approaches to effective communication of climate risk. Leading on developing internal training material around risk and climate science.

  • Building out E3G’s network.

  • Building constructive relationships with external stakeholders across a range of sectors to advance strategic priorities. Representing E3G and presenting E3G’s work at meetings and events when required.

  • Producing internal and external thought leadership.

  • Supporting the production of internal and external thought leadership documents and communications materials in relation to role responsibilities.

  • Growing and managing funding.

  • Working with senior managers across E3G teams to develop and grow relationships with funders, develop fundable propositions for forward E3G work in this area, and to support sound management of projects.

  • Contribute to the work of the E3G organisation overall.

  • Proactively seeking and building internal collaborations with other teams to support E3G-wide strategic goals and to deliver strong operational management.

  • Any other reasonable management request.

Experience and skills

  • 5-7 years of relevant or transferable experience working in the fields of one or more of: climate adaptation and resilience policy or diplomacy, national security, financial risk management, humanitarian and development work, development finance.

  • Combination of strong technical analytical skills and political analysis skills.

  • Capacity and appetite to think out of the box and approach problems with both rigor and agility in a highly fluid, ambiguous external environment and context.

  • Demonstrable experience of defining innovative strategies and delivering time-bound results and impact, preferably in an organisation involved with public policy and/or climate adaptation.

  • Diplomacy: strong experience of stakeholder engagement, building relationships and mediating dialogues across a range of sectors and geographies, including with government officials at all levels and with staff from public institutions.

  • Teamwork & management: strong team management skills and track-record, and appetite and aptitude to work with a wide range of internal stakeholders.

  • Effective communication: communicate key learnings and messages simply and effectively to targeted audience. Experience of working in the field of strategic or risk communications will be an advantage.

  • Fluent or native English language skills, with prior demonstrable experience of writing high quality policy briefings or reports. Proficiency in any other languages will be an advantage.

  • A sound understanding of climate science, risks and impacts preferably with prior experience of working directly with scientists or science communicators.

  • Experience of communicating using a range of different media, e.g. reports, blogs, press, social media.

  • The candidate should be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and be positive, organised, resilient and able to deliver high quality work on time.

  • An undergraduate degree, and ideally a post graduate degree, in a relevant subject (e.g. climate adaptation, risk management, international relations, development).

The indicative salary range in Berlin for this position is €54,300 to €60,000, in London ₤49,300 - £54,000 and in Washington DC $77,875 - $83,000 per annum FTE. In Brussels is a gross monthly reference salary between €3,810 - €4,025, dependent on experience, qualification and location of the chosen candidate.

  • Yearly process for remuneration review.

  • E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance to candidates who would need to change locations in order to take up this position.
