Transport & Environment is looking for a Sustainable Finance Officer

Transport & Environment (T&E), the leading Brussels-based NGO promoting cleaner transport in Europe, is offering a policy officer position starting in February 2025.

The successful candidate will be part of T&E’s Sustainable Finance team, supporting our work on the decarbonisation of the financial system and channelling flows of private and public investments into sustainable economic activities. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of the Sustainable Finance team, based in Brussels.

Main functions of the role:

  • Take a leading role in T&E’s work on financing for clean fuels for the aviation and maritime sectors, coordinate T&E positions on the matter across several policy teams.
  • Support the Sustainable Finance team with policy analysis and developing policy recommendations on public and private sustainable investments needed for decarbonising the aviation and maritime sectors. This includes a focus on private investments in e-fuels, on public funding instruments under the EU budget, the role of public banks, national investments under EU State Aid rules, etc.
  • Deliver research and data analysis on the investment needs and impacts of private and public investments, by leading research projects.
  • Advocacy towards the EU institutions and public banks on specific financing instruments and investment tools (e.g. Innovation Fund, InvestEU, etc).
  • Engaging private investors to identify challenges and solutions to scale up green e-fuels production for offtake in the aviation and maritime sectors.
  • Write policy briefings that detail these impacts and the policy changes that would help deliver them.
  • Present these research findings internally and externally.
  • Provide input to T&E’s policy and communication strategies and to the Sustainable Finance team planning and core activities.
  • Provide overall support to the team

Job requirements

Need to have:

  • At least three years of relevant experience in economic policy and/or the financial sector.
  • Understanding of the e-fuels industry and its economics.
  • Strong advocacy skills and experience in engaging public institutions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English. Other European languages are considered a bonus.
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to write in English fluently, accurately and concisely, and experience in drafting policy papers.
  • Strong coordination, interpersonal and team-working skills

Nice to have:

  • Experience in industrial policy and sustainable finance.
  • Knowledge of shipping and aviation finance.
  • Analytical skills (Strong in Excel)
  • Experience leading research projects and studies.
  • Knowledge of the EU-level investment framework (EU budget, specific financial instruments, public banks, etc) and EU decision-making processes.
  • Experience in engaging private investors on ESG matters

Practicalities

This position is a 1 year, full-time position based in Brussels.

While we offer a flexible working environment, there is an expectation that there are at least two days per week spent in the office.
