Campaigns and Communication Coordinator - Shipping and Freight

Transport & Environment
Deadline 05.01.2025

Transport & Environment is looking for a Campaigns and Communication Coordinator - Shipping and Freight

Shipping is responsible for over 15% of the EU transport emissions and is a major source of air pollution. Thanks to decades of inaction, its environmental impact is growing. But switching to green fuels and greater efficiency would bring a cleaner future. While trucks are only 2% of vehicles on Europe's roads, they account for 25% of all road transport emissions. As T&E’s Campaigns and Communications Coordinator you will contribute to the development and execution of a winning strategy to decarbonise maritime and freight transport in Europe and globally.

We are looking for someone with communications and campaigning experience who understands how to target decision makers and stakeholders with the right content to help influence the debate to bring about change in the shipping and freight sectors. The ideal candidate will quickly grasp the key issues of transport decarbonisation and energy transition, identify opportunities, and optimise our reach to key audiences.

Working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, you will be instrumental in developing and executing the shipping team's work to influence public narratives, policy and strategy at various levels. This will involve leading on aspects of the strategy, planning and implementation of campaigns, communications and engagement.

Above all, we’re looking for an entrepreneurial individual, able to spot opportunities and work with the team to find the right channels and approaches to get our messages across. This is a new post and the successful candidate will be able to help shape the development of programmatic strategy and plans.

Job description:

  • Conceptualise, organise and deliver creative content and engagement ideas for T&E’s shipping team, in particular our work at the International Maritime Organisation.
  • Work with the shipping and road leads in the communications team to identify and develop campaign, communications and outreach opportunities which capture the imagination of decision makers.
  • Collaborate closely with shipping and freight team members to develop research ideas on which to communicate and campaign.
  • Implement project contracts, timelines and budgets, and report to funders.
  • Provide insight on story angles to effectively support campaign needs. Write and/or edit blogs, campaign and press materials, as well as visual materials in cooperation with shipping team members.
  • In conjunction with T&E’s shipping, freight and communications teams, coordinate our response to external events or incidents that offer opportunities for the shipping and freight programmes.
  • Identify external opportunities by monitoring policy discussions e.g. at the IMO and EU level as well as news and shipping media. Proactively identify stories and issues on which we may wish to comment, developing ideas and tools, including writing op-eds and other content, for exploiting these opportunities.
  • Manage external agencies, and organise events, briefings and webinars, ensuring adequate and effective liaison and coordination with external stakeholders, including researchers, experts and NGOs.
  • Look for video and visual communications opportunities, working with policy and communications colleagues, as well as external agencies, to deliver them.

Job requirements

  • Able to contribute strategically to delivering T&E’s advocacy, campaign, communications and policy goals.
  • Bring knowledge and experience to the role, ideally in transport and/or environmental/energy policy and campaigns work, but be willing to try new things, grow and share knowledge.
  • Skills in some of the following would be ideal: copywriting, media liaison, political engagement, campaign planning and implementation, as well as analysis of impact of engagement activity.
  • Experience in building relationships with a range of stakeholders internally and externally including remote staff.
  • Experience in project planning and implementation, managing campaigning tools and delivering actions e.g. digital tools, creative assets (video, advertising campaigns).

Other information:

The position will occasionally involve travel to key EU capitals.

The successful candidate will be part of T&E’s communications team, and work in close collaboration with the shipping and freight teams.

T&E will offer you a competitive salary in line with your experience and expertise, extensive benefits, and exceptional flexibility. T&E has offices in several EU countries, and we’re open to flexible working arrangements including part-time home working.
