Climate Action Network Europe is looking for an Energy Policy Coordinator - Energy Prices

Climate Action Network Europe is looking for an Energy Policy Coordinator - Energy Prices (m/f/x) (Full time or 80%, open ended contract, based preferably in Brussels)

Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is Europe’s leading NGO coalition fighting dangerous climate change. We are a unique network, in which environmental and development organisations work together to issue joint lobby campaigns and maximise their impact. With over 200 member organisations active in 40 European countries, representing over 1,700 NGOs and more than 40 million citizens, CAN Europe promotes sustainable climate, energy and development policies throughout Europe.

We are currently seeking a motivated and experienced Energy Policy Coordinator with a focus on energy pricing and a socially just energy transition (full time or part-time, minimum 80% FTE), to be based in Brussels or working remotely from a country within the EU.

Your tasks:

  • Policy, advocacy and communications: You are our expert on a socially just energy transition, with a focus on ensuring affordable energy prices, while advancing the energy transition towards renewables and energy savings. You engage in relevant ongoing debates, write compelling position papers, factsheets and briefings, represent us in relation to external stakeholders and relate your knowledge to media and on social media. You also monitor developments around the Just Transition Fund and Social Climate Fund.
  • Strategic coordination: You develop an overarching narrative, strategies and tactics in coordination with our members and partners to ensure energy prices for household consumers (and industry) in Europe are affordable, promote the renewable energy uptake, and encourage energy saving. You identify opportunities to achieve policy changes in line with our demands, coordinate with our members and external partners to make the best use of opportunities and co-convene internal and external meetings dedicated to these issues.
  • Fundraising and reporting: You contribute to fundraising efforts related to your work areas and regularly report on activities through the CAN Europe reporting system and for individual projects and grants as required.
  • For further details, please refer to the job description.

Required skills and experiences:

  • At least 4 years of professional experience in the field of political advocacy, campaigning or strategy development or equivalent, ideally in an NGO environment, ideally with experience engaging at both EU and Member States level.
  • Profound knowledge of the energy sector in Europe, in particular on electricity market design, the Emissions Trading System and other policies affecting energy prices, and their implementation in Member States.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to translate complex issues in a compelling way to various stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with EU institutions, particularly the functioning of the European Parliament and the Council.
  • Outstanding networking skills, ideally demonstrated in an NGO environment.
  • High level of motivation and the ability to independently execute work while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team-working skills.

Desirable skills and experiences:

  • Strong understanding of the Central and Eastern European context (political dynamics, key actors, the roadblocks slowing down the transition and coal phase-out and specificity of the energy mix). Experience in advocating for social justice, renewable energy and energy pricing policies at the national level in the region is a plus.
  • Additional European languages, especially Central Eastern European languages, are considered an asset.
  • Experience in external communications and dealing with journalists.
  • Background in facilitating group discussions with people from different backgrounds.

With this opportunity, we offer:

  • A full time or 80% part-time employment or consultancy contract with flexible working hours and the possibility of teleworking. This position is preferably based in Brussels but it is also open to applicants from the European Union or those already in possession of a residence and work permit. We are not considering sponsoring visas this time.
  • Remuneration is based on our Belgian salary grid and adapted to the cost of living on location.
  • If the position is based at our head office in Brussels, we will offer:
    • A Belgian open-ended contract with an expected salary between 3,786€ and 4,880€ gross/month depending on the relevant years of experience (0 to 20 years), and subject to Belgian tax;
    • Meal vouchers (7,00€/day); transport costs; eco-vouchers (250€ for each full calendar year); sport and culture vouchers (100,00€ for each full calendar year), phone allowance (39,00€/month); work computer.
  • In other cases, it will be a consultancy contract or an employment contract, depending on opportunities, with equivalent remuneration in line with the local cost of living.
